On hot summer days, New York City can be up to 10 degrees more sizzling than surrounding areas. The record temperature was set in 1926, when Central Park reached a scorching 106 degrees. Although we haven’t had quite the same records, we’ve had more than our share of 90+ degree days the last few summers. Here are some ways to help you stay cool as summer heats up.
- Stay out of the sun during peak hours as much as you can. Plan your workout or other physical activities when the air is coolest, between 4 and 7 a.m.
- When you’re outside, wear a hat and suncreen. (But you already do this, right?) Dress in light-weight, light-colored clothing.
- Drink plenty of water, even when you’re not thirsty. Your body needs extra hydration in high temperatures. Also, avoid beverages with alcohol or caffeine, which will dehydrate you. Also, recognize the signs of heat stroke.
- Cool off at local beaches, swimming pools or cooling stations.
- Cool down with cool baths or showers. However, never shower immediately after becoming overheated, as this can cause nausea and dizziness.
- Cool off indoors at a library, museum, movie theatre or local ice cream shop. Check out these ideas by locals in the know.
- Be a good neighbor, check on elderly and people with disabilities in your community who may need assistance keeping cool.
- Something that bears repeating — NEVER leave children or pets in a car during a heat wave.
