New Hotel Space Coming to NYC

A few new hotels will soon be showing up in New York City, providing visitors with more options for overnight travel when visiting the area. While some of these hotels will serve as hotels only, others will include hotel space along with options for residential housing. Here is a look at a couple of the new hotels that will soon be gracing the NYC skyline.

Construction Begins on Roosevelt Island Hotel

Construction on a Snøhetta-designed hotel on Roosevelt Island has officially gotten underway. Known simply as the Graduate Roosevelt Island hotel, the hotel is part of a larger project on Cornell Tech’s new campus. While the campus opened to plenty of fanfare last September, the $2 billion campus is far from complete.

Once complete, the new 18-story, 224-key property will be the only hotel on Roosevelt Island. Architect Snøhetta is also behind the adjacent Verizon Executive Education Center, with the two connected structures serving as the “front door” to the campus while still offering unobstructed views of the skyline with floor-to-ceiling windows. Meanwhile, the interior will include reference points to the history of Roosevelt Island as well as the surrounding campus. Other indoor features will include a full-service restaurant, 3,000 square meet of flexible meeting and event space and an indoor-outdoor rooftop bar boasting views of Manhattan.

Graduate Roosevelt Island Hotel is expected to open in the spring of 2020. The property will be ran by Graduate Hotels, which is a boutique chain that targets college towns. Other buildings currently on the Cornell Tech campus include three buildings designed by Weiss/Manfredi, Morphosis, Handel Architects. The completion of the hotel and education center will also wrap up the first phase of the construction process. Altogether, the construction of the 12-acre campus will take place in three phases, with the last phase expected to be completed in 2043.

New 26-Story Condo-Hotel Hybrid Coming to Williamsburg

A 26-story hotel and condo will soon appear in the lot next to the former headquarters of the Williamsburgh Savings Bank. The space, which is located at the intersection of Broadway and Driggs Avenue, is right across from the Williamsburg Bridge. Once complete, the hotel will feature 251 hotel rooms and 21 apartments. While the hotel will take up the first 16 floors of the building, the floors above those will house the apartments. The units will have an average measurement of 860 square feet with three to four apartments located on each floor. Planned amenities for the hotel include a swimming pool on the eighteenth floor, a fitness center and bicycle storage.

The site where the hotel will be constructed was reportedly purchased by Cornell Realty for $26.2 million. Plans for the hotel were filed with the city’s Department of Buildings, with Stonehill Taylor Architects being the applicant. Meanwhile, the adjacent bank building now operates as an event space after having gone through a three-year restoration process.
