NYCxDESIGN, New York City’s official citywide celebration of design will return Tuesday, May 3rd – Tuesday, May 17th.

Spanning all disciplines of design, NYCxDESIGN creates a collaborative platform for cultural and commercial opportunities, elevates established and emerging design practices and increases awareness of and appreciation for design by all audiences.

Hosted in New York City, NYCxDESIGN brings together all the disciplines of design, commerce, culture, education, and entertainment with a full, varied program, including exhibitions, installations, trade shows, talks, launches and open studios. 2015, the third year of the celebration, featured over 500 events at 228 venues across the 5 Boroughs of New York City and included topics from graphic design to architecture, technology and urban design to fashion and product design, interiors to landscape, furniture to design thinking, and more.

Highlights include:

Isaac Mizrahi – An Unruly History: “Isaac Mizrahi: An Unruly History” is the first museum exhibition to focus on the influential American fashion designer, artist, and entrepreneur. On view from March 18 to August 7, 2016, the exhibition explores Isaac Mizrahi’s unique position at the intersection of high style and popular culture. While best known for his clothing designs, Mizrahi’s creativity has expanded over a nearly three decade career to embrace acting, directing, set and costume design, writing, and cabaret performance. Spanning his first collection in 1987 to the present day, An Unruly History weaves together the many threads of his prolific career, juxtaposing work in fashion, film, television, and the performing arts.

Design Into Art – Highlights from the Collection: Long before it was widely accepted to do so, Isamu Noguchi ignored the traditional distinction between “art” and “design.” This exhibition focuses on the permeable membrane between these categories in Noguchi’s work, with lightweight and flat-packable furniture, stage sets, sculpture, and Akari Light Sculptures.

The Future of Branding in a Digital Meets Physical Universe: Discover how a brand can come to life across all media and why this matters with Red Antler, a branding company that works with startups from different disciplines. If you believe in the power of building a brand don’t miss this event!

Studio Job Mad House: Studio Job MAD HOUSE is the first American solo museum exhibition of the work of collaborators Job Smeets (Belgian, b. 1970) and Nynke Tynagel (Dutch, b. 1977), who established their atelier, Studio Job, in Antwerp in 2000. Since then, they have developed a distinctive body of highly expressive and opulent work, characterized by pattern, ornament, humor, and historical, sociocultural, and personal narrative. Smeets and Tynagel draw inspiration from an itinerant education, traveling throughout Europe and studying important historical collections of art and decorative arts. Their commitment to craftsmanship reflects an ongoing interest in the revival of traditional applied arts practices, such as bronze casting, gilding, marquetry, stained glass, and faience, but with a contemporary approach. The atelier operates in the manner of an Old Master artist studio by engaging the skills of the most talented artisans in the production of their work. The interdisciplinary nature of Studio Job’s oeuvre makes it difficult to categorize. Their work is deliberately provocative and unconventional, giving them the reputation of enfants terribles of the art and design world. This exhibition features a variety of media and forms, including art objects, furniture, sculpture, lighting, interiors, and wall and floor coverings in an immersive installation conceived by the artists uniquely for MAD.
