About East Harlem

East Harlem Neighborhood in NYC: UPPER MANHATTAN

East Harlem—the home where talents including Marc Anthony, Ray Barretto, Al Pacino, and Tupac grew up—is a diverse neighborhood with strong Italian roots. The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel—a NYC landmark—is the first Italian Parish in the city. East Harlem is also home of one of the original pizzerias of New York City: Patsy’s Pizzeria. Patsy’s Pizzeria has been embroiled in a long-time family feud with Grimaldi’s Pizzeria. Patsy Grimaldi, the nephew of the original Patsy opened a Patsy’s in 1990 in Brooklyn and then changed its name to Grimaldi’s. Today, the restaurant's owner is actor Frank Pellegrino from the popular HBO show, The Sopranos. Another Italian NYC dining classic is Rao’s. Standing since 1896, Rao’s serves traditional Southern Italian cuisine and has been featured in Top Chef and a Jay-Z music video.

East Harlem is also home of the major television studio, Metropolis. At 106th Street and Park Avenue, Metropolis produces shows that include BET’s 106 & Park and Chappelle’s Show. The media gallery and digital film studio, MediaNoche is also located in East Harlem. This studio not only provides exhibition space for the digital arts, it also provides artists housing in New York City. East Harlem has a unique and rich culture, and it continues to hold onto its roots as it evolves with time.
