Exploring NYC Real Estate News

From new condos hitting the market to celebrity real estate news, here is a look at some of the things happening in the world of NYC real estate.

Greenpoint Condos to Replace Local Bakery

A new condo development consisting of two six-story buildings with 14 apartments is now on the market. The development, which replaced a bakery in Greenpoint’s New Warsaw, features 14 apartments in two- and three-bedroom variants starting at $1.57 million. Called 868 Lorimer, the development features one building that fronts on Lorimer Street and another that fronts on Manhattan Avenue. Both are connected to a lush interior courtyard. First announced in early 2015, the development replaced a bakery that called the spot its home for 25 years.

Chatham Development Company purchased the former bakery and its land for $4.7 million before constructing the two six-story buildings on the plot. Some of the building’s apartments have hit the market, including a two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo for $1.57 million, a two-bedroom unit for $1.97 million and a three-bedroom for $2.7 million. Designed by Stephen B. Jacobs Group, the apartments have come fitted with kitchens boasting custom Italian cabinetry, white oak plank flooring and private outdoor space. Residents also enjoy use of the central courtyards, which provides access to a children’s playroom, a communal workspace and bicycle storage.

Proposed Topper on Tribeca Building Halted by Landmarks Preservation Commission

Developers were hoping to add a two-story residential addition to the top of an existing retail and office building at 50 Hudson Street in Tribeca, but the Landmarks Preservation Commission has sent the developers back to the drawing board despite the fact that more than a dozen local residents spoke in support of the addition. Many residents praised the contemporary design and said they were excited to see a new addition to the neighborhood.

The design plans, which were created by architect Theirry Despont who is also credited with designing the Woolworth Building, called for building the two-story addition with glass brick. The addition would house three apartments and would include a rooftop terrace and a penthouse atrium. Some of the LPC commissioners, however, felt the glass brick was inappropriate for the neighborhood and did not care for the setback on the addition. Instead, they preferred it to be set flush with the existing building.

Built in 1925, the building once housed a paper company. The building has had retail on the ground floor for the past several years as well as offices on the two floors above that. The LPC also approved a penthouse addition on the rear side of the building in 2007. That penthouse is currently occupied by the building’s owner, Eric Schlagman. Schlagman has been trying to expand the building for some time, but has run into roadblocks by both the Historic District Council and Community Board 1.

Rosie O’Donnell Purchases Midtown East Triplex Penthouse

Rosie O’Donnell has reportedly spent $8 million for a 3,600-squre-foot home in Midtown East. The triplex penthouse offers four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a massive living and dining area featuring floor-to-ceiling windows boasting views of the city. The living room also features a wet bar and a wood-burning fireplace, while the kitchen has an espresso machine, a 70-bottle wine refrigerator, white Corian countertops and appliances by Miele and Gaggenau.

Meanwhile, the master bathroom features a television screen on a glass wall, a free-standing tub, a steam shower and heated floors. A sculptural staircase connects the two floors of the apartment. The condo also features a 1,600-square-foot rooftop terrace, which includes an integrated sound system, lounging areas, an outdoor kitchen and views of the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building.
