The face of legendary author Gabriel García Márquez graced the front page of The New York Times last Friday, April 18th. García Márquez, affectionately known to his fans as “Gabo”, lost a long battle with cancer on Thursday at his home in Mexico City.  From New York to Paris, literary enthusiasts and prominent writers alike were heartbroken by the news of his passing.

García Márquez was born in Aracataca, a small village quietly nestled between the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Caribbean Sea in northern Colombia. He began his career as a journalist and was the deputy head of the Prensa Latina office in Midtown Manhattan for a short period of time.

Over the years, García Márquez began to craft a vast array of fictional novellas, often incorporating his trademark motif of magic-realism, coupled with a sensational depiction of life in Latin America. Gabo was undoubtedly an international literary pioneer and in 1982 he was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize for Literature. García Márquez ‘s fictional works including his most famous novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude, have sold millions of copies worldwide and were translated into over 20 languages.
